New Year Protocols!

I want to thank all the lovely people who took the survey to help me figure out a few changes for Sometimes I’m a Story this year! It was super helpful, and with that and a few statistics I’ve been taking from post popularity, I have a few things planned for the next few months, and we’ll see how it works out.

Firstly, I went and checked out the usual times I post, I comment, and you guys comment. I make a lot of sense, people: I post and comment around the schedule of my day. YOU on the other hand post at all times of the day, and are weird. But I mean that in the best way possible—I think it just means that in one way or another I get traffic from people who live in vastly different time zones than me.

Secondly, I divided up the posts on the blog into four quadrants: Top 15, Upper Half, Lower Half, and Posts Without Comments. Looking at them all, I could see a few correlations in the groups that existed.

Lastly, I took a look at what you said in your surveys, and drew some common threads from there as well.

So… Yeah. I guess I can work with that. There are a few things I’m playing with right now that may come to fruition later, but in the meantime, here are my responding actions.

And, for the month of January, this is my tentative blogging schedule:

MondaySecond Listen Posts
TuesdayReading/Writing/Blogging Discussion Posts
ThursdayBook Discussion Posts (Thursentaries, every other week)
FridayWBI Posts  (every other week)

So, I think that amounts to about three posts a week, and every now and again linkups like TCWT, etc. will feature on the weekends.

OKAY. Now, people have indicated various things, and for the present I want to talk about two of them, because even though I am alone in my basement I am not alone on the Internet. Therefore, I have two ideas, which may or may not work out.

Below you will find some little surveys, because I didn’t feel like making a Google Form. You can post your answers in the comments, if you have any opinions. Or if you’re shy and don’t want other people to know your answers you can send them to me on my Contact Form. Or if you’re shy but are okay with other people seeing your answers you can just post them anonymously, since I’m okay with that kind of thing.

Anyway, if these are things you would want to participate in, PLEASE let me know by answering my questions, because otherwise they are not going to happen.

Item A: A Giveaway

I am a freeloader, which means that even though my parents are not poor I technically am and merely live off their good graces. This means that I have limited options when it comes to what I might give. I have a blog, reasonable sums of money, and a lot of time, and so I ask you these questions:

  1. Which of these things would you be interested in getting in a giveaway?
    1. a physical book which Heather doesn’t want anymore (related to question 2)
    2. a critique on your writing (related to questions 3 and 4)
    3. a gift card (related to questions 5 and 6)
    4. a chance to guest post (related to question 7)
  2. Would you still want a physical book if you knew the only reason Heather would part with it is because she doesn’t like it?
    1. Yes
    2. No
    3. Depends on the Book
  3. Which kind of writing critique option would you prefer?
    1. a critique shared publicly on the blog
    2. a critique exchanged personally through email, etc.
  4. What length of critique do you think would be the most valuable?
    1. a few paragraphs (first 250, troublesome paragraph, etc.)
    2. a few pages (as much as one chapter)
    3. a few chapters (like three, though. not the whole thing.)
  5. Which potential gift cards are the most appealing?
    1. Amazon
    2. bookseller other than Amazon
    3. somewhere with food (Starbucks, etc.)
    4. some other place I’ll tell you about in the comments
  6. Depending on which place gets chosen, does a $5-10 gift card sound reasonable?
    1. Yes
    2. No, it should be a little higher
    3. No, it should be a lot higher
  7. Do you think a guest post would be a valuable chance for you to advertise?
    1. Yes
    2. No
  8. If there were to be a giveaway, would you enter?
    1. Yes
    2. No
    3. Depends

Item B: A Fan Week Linkup

This was a hugely fun and beneficial week for me, and something I got a lot of positive feedback from. I think it would be super fun if several people went out and did this together to find new blogs, share meaningful or useful posts, and to keep the focus on others.

But, I don’t know if a group project like that sounds fun or not. So:

  1. Is this something you think you would participate in, if it existed?
    1. Yes
    2. No
    3. Maybe
  2. Even if it’s not something you could participate in, do you think a “Fan Week Team” is an idea you’d be interested in following?
    1. Yes
    2. No
    3. Maybe

THANK YOU AGAIN for all the lovely feedback and the encouragement I received. You, dear readers, are awesome!

  1. I'm all for a fan week sort of thing - I've been wanting to do it, actually, ever since I saw that you did. I think it's super cool, and getting a group of people to do it would be an amazing way to find new blogs and help promote each other's blogs - you could even make it into a linkup of sorts, where everyone who participates writes up a post like you did with all the blogs they found and such? I don't know, it just strikes me as a cool thing to do.

    1. Those are definitely some important ideas I'd hope to take into account, and depending on who I could collect to join me I would certainly hope it would end up with written up posts and that sort of thing! :)

  2. Ooh, it was cool to hear the survey results. Okay. Here we go:

    1) 1, 2, 3, 4
    2) 3
    3) 1
    4) 1
    5) 4: Book Depository? (Or is that 2?)
    6) 1
    7) 1
    8) 3
    B
    1) 3
    2) 1

That was rather long, but I couldn't think of an alternative way to show all the answers. :D

It's okay that it's long! This is super helpful—thank you!

    2) 3
    3) 1
    4) 1
    5) 1
    6) 1

    8) 3 - taking your example, Starbucks, I've never seen one in NZ. So a gift card for there would be useless to me :)

    1. LET US REJOICE IN THE STRUCTURE AND OUR IXTJNESS!

Thanks for your feedback! (I assume by "not bothered" you mean "don't care"? Like I just want to make sure because I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that before. XD)

Also, it's weird that you've never seen a Starbucks... Here they're on every other corner. :P

    2. Haha yes. It's NZ slang I guess.

  4. Ooh, I think I missed when your survey was up, but that's cool you got helpful feedback! Surveys are quite interesting...(I'm getting some funny results from mine, lol) but remember to blog about what makes you happy too. ;-)

Okay for the second round of questions...
I think giving away books you don't like is totally acceptable. Also, $5 amazon gift cards are a perfectly reasonable amount! I usually gift ebooks that are below $5 for my giveaways too. I am also a poor freeloader. :( And I vote for Amazon because that makes it international, whereas starbucks is USA only.

    1. Surveys are great! I hope you certainly update us on YOUR surveys then, if they are as interesting as you claim. XD Thanks for the advice, though... The making myself happy is easy to forget.

I'm glad I'm not the only freeloader, then! And Amazon definitely seems like a good way to go (as I had no idea that Starbucks was only in my country. You learn something new every day!). Thanks for the input, though—I'm always happy to glean advice from people who have traveled the path I seek. :)

  5. Aw, I also missed your survey! I just did one of my own about a month ago and my results match up with yours well, discussions seem to be very popular across the board. I like the Amazon gift card idea, plus there are always some great books on sale for less than $5 :)

    1. It's funny how different blogs can come up with similar results, no? But good! I'm glad that there's a reasonable and inexpensive price for something we all love. :D (Or can use, anyway.)

Check it out, comments and stuff. I love to hear from readers, and I always respond to commenters! Here's the fun part—if you leave a link to your blog I'll show up and comment back. I have just one rule down here: Don't Be a Problem. This spans the entire umbrella of rudeness and crudeness, so I reiterate: Don't Be a Problem. Thanks for stopping by!
